Worship with a Singaporean identity
A few words on worship from Divine Appointment for those who werent able to make it. Our first plenary speaker, Dr Lim Swee Hong from TTC, emphasised the importance of finding our Singaporean identity in worship so that we may worship with integrity. This sounds pretty cheem, so let me elaborate a bit. Many Singapore Churches have become very Ang Moh. Our services mirror those from other countries (mainly the west) and we sing worship songs written by Westerners. It is of course not a very bad thing to use worship songs written by foreigners, however songs like those from Hillsongs were written by Australians for Australians. They reflect the culture and identity of Australians, the tune and words are Australianish. They do not reflect our culture, it does not relate directly to us, we are borrowing someone elses identity to worship God. It can be equated to an Australian singing our popular nation day song ‘Home’ during Australia’s national day. Imagine an Aussie singing ‘I will always recall the city, know every street and shore, sail down the river which brings us life, winding through my Australiaaaaa, this is Home trulyy…’ It doesn sound right does it? There are many cities in Australia, many rivers and the tune of the music is not Australianish. So how can we worship with a Singaporean identity and with integrity? An idea of course is to write our own worship songs, which is a great idea of course, but not everyone can write songs. God knows this, thats why He has given the gift of song writing to many Christians in Singapore. So without further adue I present to you:
In Deep Worship 2,
An inter-denominational worship session that will feature 5 local worship songs from 5 churches! They are (in alphabetical order): Cairnhill Methodist Church, City Harvest Church, Covenant Presbyterian Church, Faith Community Baptist Church and Faith Ministries (Roman Catholic). ID2 is happening on Friday 24 October 2008, 8pm, at Cairnhill Methodist Church – ACS Junior (25 Peck Hay Road), behind Newton MRT. The focus this time is on “Worship & Healing” and the guest speaker is Rev Edmund De Souza (Christ Methodist Church). (I went for his session @ DA, it was really really good!)
So if you’d like to go, please drop me an email (darylganyw@hotmail.com) and if theres enough people, we’ll set a time to meet up and go together to Cairnhill Methodist Church for IDW2!
